4 tips for Sustainable Shopping

4 tips for Sustainable Shopping

As shoppers, the first step we can take to protect the environment is to buy fewer new clothes. This is all about increasing our awareness and shopping more mindfully.
Here are some ideas to get you started.
1. Beware of temptation.
Many of us have fast fashion apps on our phones so they’re at our fingertips when we want to have a browse. Deleting these or switching off notifications could help you avoid the temptation of unnecessary new items.
2. Turn off ads where possible.
We are constantly bombarded with advertising campaigns asking us to buy new things. Where possible, try blocking these ads to reduce your new item FOMO.
3. If you’re not sure, wait.
Sometimes we buy things and then wonder why afterwards. Rather than impulse buying, wait for a while and see how you feel. You could also try asking yourself these four questions:
“Do I love it?” We’re talking about the “happily ever after” kind of love - will this item bring you joy for years to come and be something you wear over and over again, or over 30 times?
“Does it fit in with my existing wardrobe and is it adaptable?” Can you make multiple outfits and combine it with your existing wardrobe? Will it adapt over time? If you’d have to buy a whole new wardrobe to create an outfit from it or if it’s just a “trend piece”, it may be best to sleep on the decision.
“Is it good quality?” Although our budgets don’t always allow for high quality items, quality over quantity is important. Higher quality items last for longer and are more successful at resale than lower quality items.
“Can I find this second hand?” As well as Thrift+, where you can buy clothes second hand, there are an amazing selection of clothes swapping and rental services available. Before you buy something new, think about whether you could find it second-hand. You’ll save money, and will be more likely to find something unique.
    4. Get excited about the hunt.
Having something new is exciting, and gives us a little dopamine boost. This is no different when the item is second hand, it just also means you’ve found a hidden treasure, saved money and helped the environment, and can truly use the phrase “What, this old thing?!”
